The Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch) has taken exception to calls by the public and other CSOs to authorities of Chiana SHS and the Ghana Education Service to reconsider their decision on the 8 sacked students.

The Education think tank says even though it sympathises with the students on their dismissal, the punishment is appropriate to retribute the girls’ “unacceptable conduct” and also deter others from future incidents.

In a statement issued Thursday, January 12, 2023, following the sacking, Eduwatch said allowing institutions to “discipline students in line with approved rules” is the right way to purge the society from immorality.

“The continuous interference in school discipline has contributed to the growing indiscipline which is affecting effective teaching and learning in our SHSs,” it added.

It however advised victims who “feel the process or outcome is unfair to appeal” since they have the right to, to ensure schools become “a haven of discipline, not a den of indiscipline.”

Meanwhile, the Institute for Education Studies (IFEST) is asking authorities to reconsider a punishment that seeks to reform the girls than ending their academic journeys.
