The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has introduced a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) framework to evaluate the performance of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), with sanitation identified as a key benchmark in assessing assemblies’ effectiveness.
In line with this directive, the Oforikrom Municipal Assembly has announced plans to recruit about 90 sweepers to tackle sanitation challenges within the municipality.
The decision follows the termination of the government’s contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited, which previously managed sweepers across various assemblies nationwide. Since the contract ended, several assemblies, including Oforikrom, have faced difficulties maintaining sanitation standards.
Speaking during the presentation of four tricycles and three refuse bins to the Oforikrom, Ayiya, Bomso and Ayeduase Zonal Councils, the Municipal Chief Executive, Anwel Sadat Ahmed, said the recruitment would significantly improve cleanliness in the area.
“Sanitation has become a key performance indicator for all MMDCEs, and we cannot afford to fail in this regard. As an Assembly, we are taking proactive steps to ensure that filth is reduced across all electoral areas,” he stated.
He explained that the termination of the Zoomlion contract created a gap in sanitation management, which the Assembly is determined to address.
“Since the contract ended, we have experienced some challenges, but we are not folding our arms. The recruitment of about 90 sweepers will help us restore order and improve environmental cleanliness in Oforikrom,” he added.
Mr Ahmed further urged residents to support the Assembly’s efforts by practising proper waste disposal.
“Sanitation is a shared responsibility. We will provide the logistics and personnel, but residents must also play their part in keeping their surroundings clean,” he emphasised.
The sweepers will be paid by the assembly through the District Assembly Common Fund.
Assembly members from the beneficiary zonal councils also pledged their commitment to supporting the initiative.
“We assure the Assembly of our full cooperation. We will work closely with the sweepers and sensitise our communities to support this vision of maintaining a clean municipality,” they affirmed.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen waste management systems and promote a cleaner and healthier environment in the municipality.
