9 school children drown, one body missing after a canoe capsizes at Faana-Bortianor

Nine school children have drowned on their way from school at Faana-Bortianor, an island community near Weaboman in the Weija Gbawe municipality of the Greater Accra region.

The incident which occurred Wednesday afternoon, involved 12 passengers who were on board a canoe which capsised and left 9 drowned.

The school children are believed to be between 3 and 13 years.

Explaining the incident the Weija Gbawe Municipal NADMO Director, Emmanuel Adu Boahene said three of those on board survived the accident whilst one of the drowned 8 is still missing.

He explains the Member of Parliament for Weija, Tina Naa Ayerley Mensah, together with the MCE and other authorities are at the scene in search of the body of the missing person.

Meanwhile, Mr Adu Boahene says the three who survived the accident have been sent to the hospital, treated and discharged.

Uniquenewsgh sources indicate the canoe owner is currently assisting the police with the investigation.

Meanwhile, the deceased has been sent to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital mortuary in Accra whilst parents have been called on to help identify their wards.
